Brave Rail Employee Endures Life-Threatening Wounds Amid Multiple Knife Attack on Express Service

A brave train staff member who intervened to protect travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a express train has suffered life-threatening injuries, police stated on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Event

CCTV footage allegedly shows the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train journeyed between a city and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims running through compartments.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Response and Aftermath

The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been discharged from medical care.

A bystander recorded the individual waving a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced police on the platform. He was allegedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous employee of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by specialist officers,” said a high-ranking law enforcement officer.

Union Response and Calls for Measures

Train unions were swift to praise employees and call for more action. One labor leader said he would be “seeking immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and police to ensure that we have the best possible assistance, tools and effective procedures in operation”.

Another union leader urged the rail company and authorities “to move quickly to examine safety, to help the impacted employees, and to ensure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Driver Commended for Rapid Thinking

The operator who stopped the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been praised by union representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver didn’t halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s clearly challenging for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much already there,” explained a union official.

Further Information

Police stated they got the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness recounted initially thinking if the situation was a Halloween joke, but quickly understood from individuals' expressions that it was real.

Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terror-related incident and have requested the community to provide with any further details.

Rail operations on the impacted line are anticipated to experience disruption until Monday, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where possible.

Individuals with information that could assist the investigation are encouraged to contact authorities by sending a message a specific number with a reference code.
