Previous FBI head James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and impeding a legislative process.

Mr Comey's lawyer submitted the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would seek to have the case terminated for several factors including that his client, a critic of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused soon after the former president pressured his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they intended to file several petitions to throw out the proceedings before a trial, claiming the legal action was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully appointed to assume control of the legal matter.

Mr Comey's case was originally handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his investigation into a different opponent - the New York official - failed to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was supported by his partner, his wife and child Maureen, a US lawyer who the former government dismissed.

Upon hearing to the judge read his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Previous Events

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the period, he was overseeing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey triggered a counter-response from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege James Comey lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the agency to release to media organizations information about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

Via social media James Comey posted to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was not guilty and accused Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"We have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."

These allegations against James Comey emerged after Trump shared on social media calling for his top legal official, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and additional individuals.
